Gas Safe registered means an engineer is legally qualified to work on gas boilers, appliances and pipework in the UK, and it’s the only register recognised by law for this kind of work. Anyone carrying out gas heating work on your home, whether it’s a new installation, a repair or a service, has to be on it. It’s a simple thing to check, but it matters, especially in a town like Henley-on-Thames where a lot of gas heating work happens in older properties with ageing pipework.

What does Gas Safe registration actually cover?
Gas Safe Register replaced the old CORGI scheme in 2009 and is the UK’s official register for gas engineers. Being registered means an engineer has been assessed as competent to work safely on gas appliances, and every registered engineer carries an ID card showing their photo, licence number and which types of gas work they’re qualified for, not every engineer is qualified for every type of job.
Why does it matter who does the work?
Gas is dangerous when it’s not handled correctly, carbon monoxide leaks, fires and explosions are all real risks from poorly installed or maintained gas appliances. Gas Safe registration exists to make sure the person working on your boiler actually knows what they’re doing, and it’s a legal requirement, not just a recommendation. Using someone who isn’t registered is against the law and puts your home and family at risk.
How do I check if an engineer is Gas Safe registered?
You can check three ways:
- Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the photo matches
- Look up their licence number on the Gas Safe Register website
- Call Gas Safe Register directly to confirm
Always check before work starts, not after. A genuine engineer will expect you to ask and won’t be put off by the question.
What should a Gas Safe registered engineer do vs an unregistered trader?
| Gas Safe registered engineer | Warning sign of an unregistered trader |
|---|---|
| Carries an ID card with photo and licence number | Can’t produce an ID card, or it looks worn, altered or unclear |
| Happy for you to check their registration before work starts | Discourages you from checking, or rushes you into a decision |
| Provides a written quote and, for landlords, a Gas Safety Certificate afterwards | Works cash in hand with no paperwork |
| Only carries out work they’re qualified for, shown on their ID card | Offers to do “anything gas related” regardless of what’s listed |
| Registered engineers appear on the official Gas Safe Register website | Not listed anywhere when you search |
Does this apply to servicing and repairs, or just new installations?
All of it. Whether it’s a full boiler installation, an annual service or a repair visit, or work on any other gas appliance in the home, the engineer carrying it out needs to be Gas Safe registered. There’s no lower risk category of gas work that’s exempt from this.
What happens if unregistered work goes wrong?
Beyond the safety risk, work carried out by someone who isn’t Gas Safe registered can invalidate your home insurance and your boiler’s manufacturer warranty, and if you’re a landlord, it can leave you in breach of your legal obligations to tenants. It’s one of the few areas where cutting corners on cost genuinely isn’t worth the risk.
Do landlords have extra requirements around Gas Safe?
Yes, landlords are legally required to have gas appliances checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer and to provide tenants with a valid Gas Safety Certificate. This applies to every rental property with gas appliances, regardless of size or location.
